The site visit to Tivoli Park in Mechelen, a city in the province of Antwerp in the Flemish Region of Belgium, will provide an in-depth look at the innovative Urban Forests project, which uses the Miyawaki method to create urban forests. This method, developed by Dr. Akira Miyawaki is a pioneering reforestation technique that facilitates the creation of dense, biodiverse forests regardless of soil and climatic conditions. This rapid growth and natural approach to soil health provides numerous ecological benefits, including positive impacts on biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and protection from soil erosion. During this visit, you will explore the urban forest in Tivoli Park in Mechelen, a prime example of how innovative reforestation techniques can transform urban spaces and improve soil health. Originally a car park, the site underwent extensive soil restoration before planting. By restoring the soil and establishing a biodiverse ecosystem, this project not only beautifies the environment, but also provides critical ecosystem services such as air purification, climate regulation, and enhanced biodiversity.

14:45 – Walk from Stiltebos to PTS Campus Mechelen: presentation about a study on the evolution for 6 urban forests in Belgium               with a focus on soil as well as of the context of the urban forest at Tivoli park

16:00 – End of the visit: return by bus to Brussels-Midi railway station

17:00 – Arrival at Brussels-Midi railway station
